BT has started the implementation of Step-Hear: audio guidance for people with visual impairments
Banca Transilvania has started the implementation Step-Hear, an international solution for assistive orientation that provides audio guidance to visually impaired people, contributing to increased accessibility in customer-dedicated spaces. The technology is developed by the company of the same name and is used in several countries to facilitate autonomous navigation in public and private locations.
First BT branch equipped with Step-Hear:
The Cluj Branch (Calea Dorobanților 27-29, Cluj-Napoca) is the first BT unit to have implemented this technology. The choice of location has a special significance due to its proximity to the Special High School for the Visually Impaired, which means an immediate impact on the local community. BT will gradually extend the implementation of the technology in other offices, to transform them into a more inclusive environment.
How Step-Hear works:
- The application is available for free in the App Store and Google Play. Once installed, the mobile phone becomes an autonomous navigation tool, providing access to private and public services.
- The system is based on Bluetooth communication between the phone and the Step-Hear devices installed in different locations, such as the BT Cluj Branch.
- In the BT Cluj Branch, technology allows visually impaired people to identify essential areas, such as the entrance, counters, and ATMs.
Recent BT initiatives or supported by the bank, in the ESG area:
- BT Sustainability Report 2025;
- D&I Living Library, event hosted by Transilvania Bank (Hive) and organized by the Diversity Charter in Romania, in Bucharest;
- Accessibility Beyond Limits, meeting hosted in Cluj-Napoca by BT, organized by DEI Cluj Talk Series;
- Extension of PEDITEL for the diaspora (for starters, in the United Kingdom) – the free pediatric telemedicine service.
- The continuation, also this year, of the project what’s next, dedicated to students, parents, teachers, and school counselors, for the counseling and career guidance of children and young people.
