Banca Transilvania launches BT Pay, a wallet-type application for shopping and money transfers with the phone

● BT, the only bank in Romania that offers the possibility to pay contactless, with the phone

Update 12:00: Almost 1000 downloads of the BT Pay application in approximately one hour.

Banca Transilvania launches BT Pay, wallet type application for shopping and money transfers with the phone. It becomes digital wallet, changing the shopping experience for BT customers who have Visa or Mastercard debit or credit cards, as well as the money transfer experience. The application can be downloaded from Google Play Store or App Store, on smartphones with Android and iOS and involves adding cards in digital format.

The launch marks two premieres: BT Pay is the first wallet in Romania that allows contactless payments, based on Visa Token Service and MasterCard Digital Enablement Service smart payment technology, and it is also the first digital wallet in Southeast Europe that uses Visa's token service.

BT Pay means the collection of payment accessories that Banca Transilvania has launched so far - the sticker, the watch, and the contactless bracelet -, and starting today, also the wallet application.

With the help of BT Pay, BT clients can perform the following:

  • Payments domestically and abroad, by bringing the smartphone close to the contactless terminals of merchants, functionality valid for smartphones with the Android operating system, the iOS system not allowing NFC (Near Field Communication) access for third-party applications.
  • Money transfer between own cards and to other people who have BT cards.
  • Consultation of details about transactions made with the BT card, the balance and, in the case of credit cards, the monthly payment amounts and accumulated STAR loyalty points.
  • Accessing the bank's offers and the campaigns of BT partners from the STAR program, dedicated to those who have shopping cards from Transilvania Bank.

Transilvania Bank's partners for the development of BT Pay are: Visa; Mastercard; Endava, British company of services and IT solutions with a strong presence in Romania and Inside Secure, global leader in mobile device security.

Statements:

  • Banca Transilvania: Ömer Tetik, General Director:

„Through BT Pay we want to offer customers new experiences when they are shopping, when they want to send money or check transactions made with the BT card. The appetite of our bank’s customers for contactless shopping is growing, the increase being over 350% in December 2017, compared to December 2016. Also, every second means 5 transactions carried out with one of the 20 cards in our offer. The launch of BT Pay is a big step the bank takes to offer customers digital services”.

  • Visa: Catalin Cretu, general director for Romania, Croatia, Malta and Slovenia:

„We are honored to launch together with Banca Transilvania the first digital wallet in Southeastern Europe that uses Visa's tokenization service. It is a significant step forward in the long-term partnership we have developed with BT, considering that over 2 million Visa cardholders issued by Banca Transilvania will be able to use their mobile phones for fast and secure payments at millions of merchants worldwide that accept contactless transactions. Since contactless technology has been enthusiastically adopted by Romanians in recent years, we are confident that the digital wallet launched today will become a success in a short time”.

  • MasterCard:Cosmin Vladimirescu, General Manager Mastercard:

„We are glad that, together with our partners from Banca Transilvania, we succeeded in launching yet another project that contributes to the development of the electronic payments segment. It is all the more encouraging since it happens exactly 10 years after the moment when Mastercard launched, for the first time, contactless payments, a payment option with a rapid evolution. Mastercard will continue to be consistently and steadily involved in ensuring access to simple, fast, and secure payments, and the first wallet that allows contactless payments is an important milestone in the materialization of efforts in this direction," declared Cosmin Vladimirescu, General Manager Mastercard.

Banca Transilvania is the leader of the card market in Romania, with over 3 million cards in the portfolio and over 20% market share regarding card transaction volumes.
