Tips & Tricks for Using Your BT Card Abroad

Do your BT cards travel with you? Here are a few tips&tricks to make the most of them when you’re abroad.

What happens when you use your card at an ATM?

Most POS terminals and ATMs will recognise your card as being issued in a country other than the one you’re in.

In that case, ATMs will display an option to debit your account in euros, dollars or the currency your card is issued in. Yes, you may be tempted to choose your card currency, but in that situation the ATM owner/operator will do the conversion and add an extra fee, which they keep.

What happens when you use your card at a POS?

You may also have noticed that at airports, restaurants or shops, when you pay by card at a POS you’re asked whether you want the conversion done or prefer to pay in euros/dollars. Did you know that if you choose to pay in lei, you’ll actually pay more than if the conversion were done in euros/dollars? That’s because merchants use their own exchange rate, which is higher than the one used by the bank.

We hope you find these tips useful.
