How to turn a house into a home

When you make changes to your home, whether you’re looking to modernise or simply refresh the feel of a room, the most important thing to keep in mind is to bring the space to life and give it personality, say Alina Vilcu and Omid Ghannadin, the architects at Inside Academy. They firmly believe interior design should be accessible to everyone because the built environment shapes our well-being. We think so too, which is why we support Inside Academy — an informal design course that covers practical know-how for fitting out a home.

In the first session we learned that the most important thing to do before any redesign or redecoration of your home is to answer a few questions:

1. What style suits you: classic, modern, contemporary, minimalist, romantic, vintage? Do you know your style?
   Identifying your preferred style gives your interior design project a common thread — and helps you see yourself in it.
2. What interior design references do you have? What do you like? Use sources of inspiration — from specialist websites to platforms such as Pinterest — any thorough search will bring you closer to your vision.
3. What budget do you have to invest in the interior? To save time and energy, it’s important to be realistic and set a clear budget for the project.
