Cătălin Caragea, Deputy CEO, Risk at Banca Transilvania, took part in the Europa Connect – Digital Romania conference organised by Gândul, where he spoke about the involvement of the private and public sectors in digitalisation, Romania’s potential in the European context, and the steps needed to close the gaps.
 

On Romania’s current level of digitalisation:

• I think there are two worlds in Romania today: the private sector and the public sector. The private sector is investing and is bold; I believe the state can follow suit.
  
  

How he sees Romania compared with other EU member states:

• I see Romania as having very strong potential. I wouldn’t necessarily say we are behind or ahead, but our potential truly needs to be tapped, because we have everything we need.
• We have human capital; I also believe we have financial resources, both domestic sources and available funds, as well as a geostrategic position and a base effect — in other words, room to grow.
  
  

On the steps needed to help Romania close the gap with other countries:

• First, create an enabling legislative framework to support development; then a much closer dialogue between public authorities and the private sector; and, after that, concrete action on what is planned.

The Europa Connect project aims to promote and explain EU policies and to facilitate dialogue with European institutions. It includes monitoring EU initiatives, communication through Gândul.ro, and annual events in Bucharest, Brussels and Strasbourg.
