Tiberiu Moisă: Large companies account for a growing share of the economy

The Top 1,000 Largest Companies in Romania yearbook, produced by Ziarul Financiar and Deloitte, was launched on 17 March this year at a dedicated event. The performance of the companies in this ranking affects around 1 million people who work for them, as well as the entire ecosystem of customers, suppliers and partners.

On the occasion of the launch, Tiberiu Moisă, Deputy CEO, Mid-Corporate & SME, said:

  • It’s time to add value on top of economic growth. I believe we have room to scale in the period ahead and, if that scaling comes with more value added—if we know the sectors where we can add value—it will be more than just growth.
  • Romanian society is like a company. We have shown this growth potential, and it’s time we also had smart growth.
  • If you look closely, large companies are increasing their share of the overall economy. SMEs are the aspirational side—some do manage to enter this top, coming up from the bottom—which is a source of potential for the economy.

Details about the ranking:

  • The Top 1,000 companies account for 46% of total turnover (up from 44% the previous year) and 25% of profit.
  • It was compiled by company turnover, which reached almost 960 billion lei in 2021 (about 195 billion euro), compared with total economy turnover of over 2,000 billion lei.
  • The more management quality improves in the companies in this ranking, the more competitive the Romanian economy will be, the more value it will generate, and the better it will be able to reward shareholders and employees.
  • Two thirds of the turnover in this ranking comes from six sectors: wholesale trade, retail trade, auto manufacturing, fuel trade, car trade, and oil and gas extraction.
  • Agribusiness companies also grew strongly in 2021, helped by a favorable agricultural year. If local agribusiness manages to add more value beyond simply growing cereals, it will be another source of contenders for the Top 1,000 in the years ahead.
