Chances are you’ve seen BT notices on social media, on our website, in certain apps or in the press that sound like this: “Dear customers, services X, Y, Z will operate intermittently/will not be available on … between … as we will be carrying out updates/maintenance on the bank’s IT system.” And that’s when you think: ugh, I had something planned then or, on the flip side: at that hour I wasn’t doing any banking anyway.
What actually happens at the bank then, what do #oameniidelaBT do, and why are these maintenance windows needed? 🔧
- Maintenance or IT updates mean the same thing: interventions in the bank’s IT system to maintain and improve our hardware and software infrastructure. They are essential — in other words, unavoidable — so we can’t do without them.
- Maintenance is always about either reliability or the security of customers’ data (and money). We mean security under all conditions, so that systems run properly and are continuously protected against cyberattacks.
- Without these interventions, applications and infrastructure would become vulnerable to potential cyberattacks, or performance would deteriorate.
- Maintenance is a daily sport: our IT colleagues carry out such interventions every day. Not every intervention means some services and products will be unavailable for a while.
In the middle of the night 🌙
We know that any maintenance window — when we pause some services — can be inconvenient. That’s exactly why, to keep the impact as low as possible, we prefer to do the work at night, when, naturally, there are fewer transactions. Depending on the intervention, the size of the team varies: it might be 15 people, it might be 5. What do we do then? System updates, reconfigurations — it depends. Maintenance mood? Attention to detail and teamwork.
Whether we’re fixing something or rolling out an update 😊, our messages are We’ll be right back!, We will be back soon!, Stay tuned for more updates!, always with appreciation for your understanding and patience.
