The BT Meal Card, the digital version of printed meal vouchers, can be added to the BT Pay wallet app. Depending on whether you use Android or iOS, it can be used to pay by phone for groceries and restaurant bills in the bank’s partner network, and to check the card balance and transactions.

Launching this option, a first in Romania, is another step by Banca Transilvania on the digital front, this time for the very large number of customers who have their salary paid into BT.

The BT Pay app can be downloaded free of charge from Google Play Store or App Store, on Android and iOS smartphones, and allows BT cards to be added in digital format, including the meal card.

BT Pay: new shopping experiences

• Key BT Pay features include: in‑store purchases and money transfers by phone, Split the cost, Request money from multiple people, and Send money to multiple contacts in your phone.
• For the BT Meal Card added to the app, given its specific use, only some BT Pay features apply: on iOS, customers can view the balance and the transaction history, while on Android they can also pay by phone in the bank’s partner network, which can be checked here.
• BT is the first bank in Romania to enable contactless payments by phone via BT Pay.
• The app has been downloaded on average 1,000 times a day since its launch in January this year.
• It is part of the BT Pay Collection, which includes, besides the app, the contactless sticker, watch and wristband.

The BT Meal Card has replaced traditional meal vouchers

• Launched by BT this year, this product is a contactless Visa card available exclusively through employers that offer meal vouchers as an extra‑salary benefit to their employees in Romania.
• It offers payment flexibility, whether the purchase amount is lower or higher than the value of a traditional meal voucher.
• It is reloadable: employers top up employees’ meal cards each month with the amount equivalent to the meal vouchers. Funds on the Meal Card—physical or in BT Pay—cannot be withdrawn or transferred.
• For retail customers with a BT Meal Card, there are no issuance/reissuance, maintenance or payment fees.

Banca Transilvania is the largest player in Romania’s card market, with 3.2 million cards issued. Transactions made with these cards and BT Pay payment accessories have increased by almost 35% compared with the same period last year.
