The #SigurantaOnline campaign kicks off: best practices for protecting personal information and money

The Romanian Police, the National Cyber Security Directorate and the Romanian Association of Banks — of which Banca Transilvania is a member — are launching #SigurantaOnline, a digital education campaign that shares best practices in cyber security via the platform sigurantaonline.ro.

Romania ranks among the top European countries for the quality and speed of internet connections, according to Digital Economy and Society Index reports, but has low levels of digital literacy. For example, 49% of households in Romania subscribe to very high-speed broadband services, placing Romania 5th in the EU. Even so, fewer than a third of citizens have at least basic digital skills. According to DNSC statistics, 90% of cyberattacks target the average user. These attacks are facilitated by human error, lack of information or inadequate training.

The #SigurantaOnline campaign kicked off during European Cyber Security Month with an online experiment:

  • As part of the campaign, several test banners carrying phishing-style messages were placed on various websites to gauge how readily people click on a banner when they are offered a guaranteed reward.
  • In 6 days of the campaign, more than 6,700 people clicked on a banner promising a guaranteed reward (55%), winning household appliances (38%), safe investments (5%) or a dream holiday (2%).
  • Most of those who clicked are men (60%) aged 35-54.
  • After accessing the test banner, people were redirected to sigurantaonline.ro, where they were invited to take a quiz to learn more advice on how to protect themselves online.

Starting 14 October, this online quiz can be taken by anyone who wants to assess their level of cyber literacy. The information entered does not have to be real, and the site does not collect personal data.

For each question, participants receive guidance on:

  • how people can recognise attempted fraud;
  • what someone should do if they have been defrauded online.

The quiz was designed specifically for this campaign and gives users both the chance to test how resilient they are to online fraud and to learn useful information for safe internet browsing.
