Further to reports in the public domain that Banca Transilvania has raised fees on certain cash transactions, we note:
- BT has some of the lowest cash processing fees, for both individuals and businesses.
- BT has the largest ATM network in Romania (1,850, of which over 1,000 are located in small and mid-sized towns, including rural areas), over 500 branches (almost all of which) process cash, and an acceptance network of over 120,000 POS terminals.
- BT has increased the number of ATMs and maintained the number of branches that handle cash, while many banks have chosen to limit these transactions; as a result, it processes over RON 100 billion annually.
- There is no link between BT’s fee adjustments and the recently announced fiscal measures (regarding limits on cash transactions). BT’s measures were discussed and assessed internally long ago, after three years with no increases, while cash processing and the maintenance of the equipment used have seen constant cost increases.
- Even though the trend in the banking market and, more broadly, in developed markets is to limit cash transactions, BT will continue to support a strong ecosystem for managing Romanians’ money, keeping cash transactions safe. Accordingly, BT will continue sustained investments in cash processing capabilities.
However, BT has decided to postpone, for the time being, any increase in fees on cash transactions.
