Banca Transilvania supports the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), which this year is being held in Cluj-Napoca. The official opening of the largest educational event ever held in Romania takes place on Sunday, July 8, at 11:00, at Sala Polivalenta.

Over 600 competitors aged 13 to 19, from 114 countries, will take part in the IMO. Each country is represented by a team of up to 6 students, accompanied by 2 mathematics teachers. In total, there are approximately 900 guests. The problems competitors are given to solve are set by the delegation leaders, who also sit on the IMO jury.

The International Mathematical Olympiad was launched at Romania’s initiative in 1959. Our country holds the record for hosting, having been the venue for the competition 5 times, in 1959, 1960, 1969, 1979 and 1999. Romania and Bulgaria are the only countries in the world to have taken part in all 59 editions. The initiative to bring the Olympiad to Romania for the 6th time was spearheaded by the Romanian Mathematical Society and is one of the events marking the Centenary of the Great Union. The honorary president of IMO 2018 is Viorel Barbu, a member of Romania’s team at the first edition of the competition.

The IMO opening ceremony can be watched on TVR Cluj, TVR 3 or TVR International, as well as on other partner television channels.

Banca Transilvania has supported other events and competitions for school and university students, including: the National Mathematics Olympiad, Hour of Code, Vreau sa fiu Antreprenor, iXperiment and Antreprenori pe scena.
