Dan Dascăl, BT Asset Management: It’s very important to build a habit of investing regularly

Dan Dascăl, CEO of BT Asset Management, took part in the inaugural BT Invest, held in Oradea in partnership with Ziarul Financiar, where he spoke about the importance of investing consistently, even with small amounts, and the need for long-term financial planning tailored to each investor’s goals and needs:

  • At BT Asset Management we manage approximately EUR 2.5 billion and have over 500,000 investors in our funds. The investment funds industry has grown steadily in recent years.

  • We have reached the milestone of 1.3 million investors in investment funds in Romania, driven overwhelmingly by retail investors. So today’s investor—contrary to what some might assume—is one with a savings-and-investing discipline, making small, recurring contributions.

  • It matters a great deal to build the habit of investing regularly. RON 100, RON 200 a month—this is the profile of the retail investor on which BT Asset Management has grown recently, and this is how we managed to double our assets under management over the past year and a half: through small and medium-sized investments.

  • In Romania, household deposits total roughly RON 420 to 450 billion. The asset management industry’s assets in Romania are around RON 45 billion—a roughly 1:10 ratio. In Sweden, only 10% of household wealth is in bank deposits. 70% of the population has investments.

  • We advise investors to build three investment buckets. One for current needs, where you put money in a fixed income fund—for example, if you know you’re going on holiday this summer, keep the holiday budget in a bond fund. Another bucket for needs a few years out—say, renovating your apartment or replacing your car—where you choose a product with a more balanced investment policy. And if you’re setting aside money for your child’s education in 10 years’ time, the most suitable choice is an equity fund to which you contribute every month.

At the BT Invest conference “How Romanian capital can grow together. From investors to companies. From capital to business”, the Banca Transilvania Financial Group was also represented by Aurel Bernat, Executive Director, Financial Markets & Investor Relations, Banca Transilvania, and by Daniela Secară, CEO BT Capital Partners.
