300,000 people save with BT Pensii

BT Pensii has reached 300,000 participants in the voluntary pension funds Pensia Mea and Pensia Mea Plus, which have built up assets of over 1 billion lei. In 2026, one in two people who chose a voluntary pension fund opted for a fund managed by BT Pensii.

  • BT Pensii recorded 86,000 new participants in 2026, up 40% from the same period last year.

  • The value of monthly contributions increased by 76% compared with the same period last year, and the average contribution is 135 lei per month.

  • One in eight participants also receive employer contributions.

  • 30% of participants are aged 35 to 44, and 22% are 34 or younger.

  • Contributions to a voluntary pension fund start from 50 lei per month and can be up to 15% of gross monthly income; the amount can be adjusted at any time at the participant’s discretion.

The study The pension system in Romania: Perceptions of the urban population, conducted in August 2026 by Quantix for Banca Transilvania, shows that Romanians are at a transition point in how they view retirement. While it was once associated with withdrawing from work, more and more people now see it as an active stage of life. The study identified two gaps: on the one hand, between concern for the financial future and the current level of financial preparedness for it, and on the other, between aspirations for an active lifestyle in retirement and the financial resources needed to sustain it. The difference between these aspirations and the level of financial preparedness explains the growing focus on saving and long-term planning.

In Romania, the average public pension is under 3,000 lei per month

Romania has 4.57 million pensioners, and the monthly public pension is under 3,000 lei, roughly half the average net wage while in work.

At the same time, the ratio of people in work to state social insurance pensioners is 10 to 8, according to the National Institute of Statistics. For this reason, additional saving through Pillar 3 is becoming an increasingly relevant part of financial preparation for retirement.
