Banca Transilvania confirms its contribution to the economic recovery in 2021. Preliminary financial results as at 31 December 2021
- BT financed companies with RON 13.1 billion and individuals with RON 8.3 billion
- With almost 240,000 loans granted last year, the bank now has over 1 million loans outstanding
- Banca Transilvania has over 2.7 million unique digital customers, representing 75% of its active customer base
- Card transactions rose by 35% in 2021, and the bank reached a record 1.2 billion card transactions
- BT’s capital adequacy ratio is 22.62% excluding profit and 24.46% including profit
Banca Transilvania ended 2021 with figures above the market average both in lending and in operational volumes. It also remained a key partner in government and EU programmes.
BT has robust capitalization, with 72% Romanian capital and nearly 39,000 direct individual investors.

The BT Financial Group’s assets stood at RON 132.5 billion at the end of last year. Loans increased to RON 50.2 billion and deposits reached RON 108 billion, of which RON 71.89 billion from retail customers and RON 36.13 billion from corporate customers. The BT Financial Group’s net consolidated profit was RON 2,045.77 million, of which the bank’s was RON 1,782.70 million. The bank’s operating profit rose to RON 2,257.20 million. Operational efficiency, measured by the cost-to-income ratio, remained at a comfortable 48.1%, supported by effective cost management and process digitalization.
BT provided significant financing to households and companies
- Over 14,000 Romanians bought a home with BT’s support, with more than RON 3.7 billion disbursed. The mortgage/housing loan portfolio stands at RON 15.5 billion.
- Over 100,000 consumer loans totaling approximately RON 4 billion were granted last year. The outstanding balance of these loans reached RON 11.4 billion.
- The bank granted approximately 15,000 new loans, totaling RON 3.7 billion, to more than 18,000 SME & Micro clients. The SME loan portfolio (as per the European definition of SMEs) reached RON 19.2 billion.
- Banca Transilvania continued to be a key partner in government and EU-funded programmes: through IMM Invest and Agro IMM Invest, BT granted over 4,000 financings totaling more than RON 2.6 billion last year.
- The Division for Physicians doubled the volume of loans granted versus 2020 (RON 1.2 billion disbursed), and financing in agriculture, via APIA, exceeded RON 500 million.
BT has over 2.7 million unique digital customers, 75% of active customers
Banca Transilvania is the market leader in cards, with 4.7 million cards in its portfolio, including more than 560,000 credit cards. With over 100,000 new cards, it was the best year for credit cards.
Card transactions increased by 35% in 2021 versus 2020. The bank reached more than 2.1 million unique cards in the BT Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Fitbit Pay and Garmin Pay wallets. The number of phone payments doubled in 2021 versus 2020, reaching 68 million. Over 1 million cash withdrawals were made using a phone, via BT Pay, at Banca Transilvania ATMs.
Other financial information
The non-performing exposure (NPE) ratio was 2.71% as at December 31, 2021, and NPE coverage with total provisions was 166%, under the EBA definition. BT’s capital adequacy ratio, excluding 2021 profit, is 22.62%, and including profit is 24.46%.
