BT financial results as at 30 June 2021: Banca Transilvania reports sustained growth in lending, transaction volumes and operations
The first half of the year confirms the economy’s recovery, and Banca Transilvania’s performance over this period shows that BT has continued to support the development of Romania’s economy and of Romanians. The bank provided substantial financing to both individuals and companies, increased transaction volumes and delivered value for its customers and shareholders. In addition to its customer-focused activity, Banca Transilvania continued to contribute to strengthening Romania’s banking sector and, in the first half of the year, signed a binding commitment to acquire Idea::Bank and the companies in the Idea Romania Group.

As a corporate citizen, Banca Transilvania has contributed over the last five years more than 2.7 billion lei to the state budget in taxes and duties, directly and indirectly, of which 712 million lei in 2020. At the same time, BT remains one of the most engaged companies in the community, with nearly 15 million lei in donations in the first half of the year.
Financial results as at June 30, 2021
The Banca Transilvania Financial Group’s assets reached 115.3 billion lei at the end of the first half of the year, with loans rising to 44.4 billion lei. Customer deposits reached 97.2 billion lei, of which 65.9 billion lei are individuals’ savings and 31.3 billion lei are deposits from corporate clients. The bank’s operational efficiency remains at a comfortable level at 46.7%. BT Group’s consolidated net profit is 1,015.5 million lei, of which the bank accounts for 901 million lei. Subsidiaries and equity investments contributed over 114 million lei to BT Group’s profitability.
The non-performing exposure ratio, under the EBA definition, was 3.47% at June 30, 2021. Coverage of non-performing exposures with total provisions under EBA standards is 148%. The bank’s capital adequacy ratio is 21.83% excluding the profit for the first six months of this year, and 23.54% including it.
The cost of risk for the first half of 2021 was 0.5%. Over the six months of 2021, the stock of provisions rose by 9.2% to 3.485 million lei, compared with the balance at the end of 2020 (3.190 million lei).
Financing and supporting Romanians in the first six months
- Between January and June this year, Banca Transilvania granted over 114,000 loans to companies and individuals. Loans to companies amount to 4.8 billion lei. The bank has approximately 3.14 million retail clients, nearly 360,000 SME & Micro clients and approximately 11,000 corporate clients.
- In 2021, BT remains a key partner in government and other European programmes, granting in the first half loans worth over 560 million lei under the IMM Invest and AGRO IMM Invest programmes, and 648 million lei under programmes with guarantees and European funds.
- BT has over 2.3 million unique digital customers, representing 67% of active clients. This is one of the indicators BT monitors constantly, reflecting the bank’s degree of digitalisation. These customers – individuals and companies – use at least one of the bank’s digital solutions: apps, Internet Banking or Mobile Banking.
- The bank has reached over 1.7 million unique cards in BT Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Fitbit Pay and Garmin Pay wallets, and the number of phone payments in H1 2021 was three times that in H1 2020, reaching 27 million.
- Of the more than 1,700 BT ATMs, 560 are multifunctional (BT Express Plus), enabling self-service banking – from cash deposits in lei and foreign currency, to FX and contactless cash withdrawals.
