BT financial results as at 30 September 2020: Banca Transilvania ready to support the economic recovery

Banca Transilvania made a significant contribution to the economic rebound in the third quarter of the year, after the shock caused by the first wave of the pandemic.

  • BT’s loan portfolio grew by 1.1 billion lei over the third quarter, reaching 40.1 billion lei.
  • Through the government IMM Invest program, the bank granted more than 7,000 loans, taking the number of SME clients with loans to over 18,000.
  • Over the quarter, the bank originated more than 30,900 retail loans, including 2,600 mortgages, bringing the number of retail customers with loans to over 750,000.
  • The bank’s focus, as before, has been on supporting retail, SME and mid‑corporate clients, underpinning the economy’s underlying activity while ensuring adequate diversification of credit risk.

“Although the trend is far from favorable due to the pandemic, we remain optimistic and confident in the economy’s recovery in the period ahead. We want to grow BT’s lending in the most responsible and efficient way possible, to support the economy and the bank’s growth. Clearly, the current context, which has affected the entire world — and perhaps even more so developed economies — also brings opportunities for Romania, and this is an advantage for us as well, because no one knows the market better than we do, as a Romanian bank” – said Ömer Tetik, Chief Executive Officer, Banca Transilvania.

Financial results as at September 30, 2020

Banca Transilvania Financial Group’s assets reached 100.4 billion lei at the end of the third quarter of this year; loans increased to 41.9 billion lei, including finance lease receivables, and customer deposits reached 83.9 billion lei, of which 58.7 billion lei are deposits from individuals and 25.2 billion lei from legal entities. The bank’s cost‑to‑income ratio remains at a comfortable level, at 45.25%. The BT Group’s consolidated net profit is 1,056.76 million lei, of which the bank’s is 901.49 million lei. Subsidiaries and equity investments contributed over 155 million lei to the BT Group’s profitability.

The non‑performing exposure ratio, as defined by the EBA, was 3.59% at September 30, 2020. Coverage of non‑performing exposures with total provisions under EBA standards is 124%. Including collateral, the coverage ratio is 131%. The bank’s capital adequacy ratio is 20.01% excluding 2020 profit and 21.80% including it.

The impact of the current environment on provisioning methodology and levels reflects Banca Transilvania’s prudent and preventive approach. BT made methodological changes to provisioning, taking into account NBR and EBA recommendations. Considering the potential future effects of the health and economic crisis, the cost of risk at the end of the third quarter of 2020 was 1.68%. In the first nine months of 2020, the stock of provisions increased by 16.2% to 2,944 million lei, compared with the balance at the end of 2019 (2,533 million lei).

The bank serves approximately 2.9 million retail clients, 329,000 SME & Micro clients and over 10,400 active corporate clients.

The Q3 2020 report, drawn up in accordance with the provisions of Article 67 of Law no. 24 of 2017 on issuers of financial instruments and market operations, will be available on BT’s website, in the Investor relations section, on November 13, starting at 9:00.
