The value and number of credit card payment transactions have doubled in Romania over the past four years, according to data published by the National Bank of Romania at the end of 2019.

• The number of credit card payment transactions reached over 22 million in December 2019, compared with 11 million in December 2015.
• The value of credit card transactions also doubled, reaching over 4 billion lei in December 2019.
• Almost 30% of last year’s credit card transactions were recorded in the fourth quarter, a record versus previous quarters.  
• Of the more than 18 million cards in circulation issued by Romanian banks, credit cards accounted for 16.5% (over 3 million cards).
• Romania has fewer than one bank card per inhabitant, one of the lowest ratios in the European Union; the same holds for credit cards, at 0.15 cards per inhabitant.
