More and more Romanians are choosing to stay financially connected to Romania. Since the start of the year, 18,000 people in the diaspora have opened an account with Banca Transilvania, either via the BT Pay or BT Pay Italia apps, or at the bank’s branches in Romania and Italy. Most of them live in Italy, the UK and Germany.
Romanians living abroad are also turning to the online platforms BT for the Diaspora and BT Italia, which have recorded almost 1 million visits this year. The platforms feature solutions for everyday banking, guidance on money management, news, information on online security and access to the FIT - Finance in Everyone’s Terms financial education program.
For Romanians living abroad, staying connected to Romania often means sending money to family, saving, investing or planning a return home. BT’s digital solutions and online information resources make this easier to manage, wherever they are.
Cashback and double interest on lei and euro savings for new diaspora customers
People in the diaspora can receive up to 100 euros cashback if they follow these steps:
- open an account online via BT Pay;
- make payments, also via BT Pay, with a BT card in lei or euro, in-store and online;
- sign up on the campaign page.
In addition, the first 500 people who open a current account via BT Pay and set up a savings account in lei or euro at Banca Transilvania as of 10 August 2026 will have the interest for the first month of saving doubled.
With BT Pay, you can manage your money anytime, from anywhere in the world
- New BT Pay customers get immediate access to all app features and receive their digital debit card instantly in the app, followed by the physical card, either for pickup at a branch or delivered to the address of their choice.
- The card can be funded via IBAN transfer or by a card from another bank added in BT Pay.
- Romanians resident in Italy have access to the BT Pay Italia app, which provides an Italian IBAN - so income from Italy can be received into a BT account with no fee for incoming payments -, a digital card and instant transfer options.
The strong interest in opening accounts remotely is also reflected in customer satisfaction. People who became clients via BT Pay gave the app a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 86 (out of 100), one of the highest recorded in Banca Transilvania’s customer satisfaction study in 2025 and the first months of 2026.
