Banca Transilvania has become a shareholder in Victoriabank. BT and the EBRD: a strategic partnership to support entrepreneurs and the economy of the Republic of Moldova

Banca Transilvania has become a shareholder of Victoriabank, the third largest bank in the Republic of Moldova, taking a stake of over 66% together with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). BT and the EBRD are the majority shareholders of Victoriabank and strategic partners supporting entrepreneurs and the economy of the Republic of Moldova.

This is the first time in the last 10 years that a bank from outside the Republic of Moldova has invested in this market, with BT opening the way for investment in the neighbouring country.

Banca Transilvania announced in November 2017 its plan to invest in the Republic of Moldova and has since received approval for the acquisition from the supervisory authorities in Romania and the Republic of Moldova — the National Bank of Romania, the National Bank of Moldova and the Competition Council of the Republic of Moldova.

Banca Transilvania’s priorities for Victoriabank, as a shareholder together with the EBRD, are:

  • Supporting the private business sector in the Republic of Moldova, especially SMEs and micro businesses;
  • Developing a broad range of products and services for retail customers;
  • Aligning Victoriabank’s organisational culture and corporate governance with those of the Banca Transilvania Financial Group;

  • Engaging in the personal and professional development of enterprising people in the Republic of Moldova through meetings and courses organised by BT Club, offering learning and networking opportunities;

Victoriabank has almost 30 years of operations, 540,000 customers, 1,400 employees and almost 100 branches. It has been behind a number of notable firsts in the local banking market, such as the first card issued, the first ATM, the first POS and the first premium cards. Victoriabank also stands out in cards: with 285,000 cards, it has a market share of over 17%, and in merchant card turnover it holds more than 37% of the market. The bank enjoys a very high level of customer trust: it has the highest ratio of deposits to total assets in the Moldovan market, at 80%, and the lowest loans-to-deposits ratio in the market, at 39%.

Banca Transilvania, the second largest bank in Romania, has 2.2 million customers, a team of over 7,000 people and more than 500 branches. BT is the Bank of Entrepreneurs, with over 250,000 business clients, with one third of newly established companies in Romania in 2017 choosing to bank with Banca Transilvania. BT is the market leader in cards, with 3 million cards issued and over 1 million transactions per day. Between January – September 2017, Banca Transilvania granted nearly 140,000 new loans to individuals, SMEs and corporate clients, with a total value of over RON 9 billion. Its strategy is supported by strong international shareholders such as the EBRD and IFC – World Bank Group.

The Banca Transilvania Financial Group has been present in the Republic of Moldova for 10 years, since it launched BT Leasing MD, the market leader by the value of fixed-asset financing provided through leasing.
