BT Story

It has been 32 years since we have been growing in Romania and since we have seen Romania growing. And it was beautiful.

Many times it was hard, but it was always interesting.

I heard ideas and I saw how they became reality.

In all this time I have seen that we have someone to rely on, that we have someone to work with, that there is someone to lend a hand, and that Romania has reasons to be optimistic.

And we are proud to be the bank of the most enterprising years in the history of this country.

How it all started

16 February

1994

The BT story begins thanks to 46 founders, who together contributed a capital of 2 million dollars. The first steps, a team of 13 employees and a branch in Cluj.

1997

Listing on the Bucharest Stock Exchange. BT becomes the first listed bank in Romania.

2001

BERD becomes a significant shareholder.

2003

The Launch of the Financial Group Banca Transilvania.

The strong expansion of the bank at the national level begins (from 40 to 500 branches, over the course of a few years).

The first rebranding of the bank.

2007

1 million BT cards issued.

2008

BT adjusts its business model to the international financial crisis.

The bank enters the top 10 players in the Romanian banking system (by assets).

2010

World premiere: Banca Transilvania and Western Union launch money transfer via ATM.

2011

Banca Transilvania enters the top 3 banks in Romania (by assets).

2014

BT turns 20 years old.

2014

Bank opens BT Italy Branch and becomes the only Romanian bank in Rome.

BT turns 20 years old.

BT becomes one of the founders of EMBA University of Hull, an initiative dedicated to entrepreneurial education.

2015 – 2016

First bank acquisition by BT: Banca Transilvania buys and integrates Volksbank Romania.

BT becomes the second bank in Romania (by assets).

2016

The second rebranding of Transilvania Bank.

BT becomes the partner of the Romanian Basketball Federation.

2017

BT acquires and integrates Bancpost

2017

Group Banca Transilvania launches BT Mic, a company dedicated to small businesses.

Banca Transilvania becomes the Partner of His Majesty King Mihai I's House.

2017 – 2018

BT acquires and integrates Bancpost.

The bank has become the leader of the card market.

2018

Banca Transilvania becomes the largest bank in Romania.

BT has become the largest bank in Southeastern Europe.

The launch of the BT Pay application, which transformed the way of doing banking.

BT has become a shareholder of Victoriabank (Republic of Moldova).

The bank launches the first chatbot for entrepreneurs.

The largest multi-purpose hall in Romania carries the Banca Transilvania brand: BT Arena.

2019

The first 100% contactless ATM

BT celebrates 25 years.

The first 100% contactless ATM.

Group Banca Transilvania acquired Certinvest Pensii and is expanding in the field of private pensions.

2020

BT adapts its business model to the challenges brought by the pandemic.

2021

The Bank has a new Headquarters (Cluj-Napoca).

BT acquires and integrates Idea::Bank into the Banca Transilvania Group. Idea::Leasing and Idea::Insurance Broker. Idea::Bank has become Salt Bank and will be the first 100% digital bank made in Romania.

Premiere in Romania: Launch of the eco-friendly card, BT Visa Classic.

2022

BT and COSR, partnership for supporting Romanian athletes at the Olympic Games.

2022

The bank buys Țiriac Leasing, BT's first acquisition of a leasing company that is not part of a financial-banking group.

Premiere in Romania: instant euro receipts through Banca Transilvania

BT launched its own technology company, Code Crafters.

BT opens Stup, a unique concept on the market, a physical and virtual space dedicated to entrepreneurs.

2023

BT has reached 4 million customers. 1 in 5 Romanians has an account at Banca Transilvania.

Banca Transilvania has reached 6 million cards.

Historical record: 8 million transactions in a single day, through all the bank's channels (cards, POS terminals, ATMs), double compared to a standard day.

Record at the Bucharest Stock Exchange.

Premiere in Europe: the launch of the animated virtual card.

Premiere in Romania: BT integrates artificial intelligence in online communication, on the Ask BT platform.

Brand Finance Banking 500 2023: the brand value of Banca Transilvania exceeds 500 million USD.

2024

Banca Transilvania has signed with OTP Group the agreement for the acquisition of OTP Bank Romania, OTP Leasing Romania, and OTP Asset Management.
