BT starts rolling out Step-Hear: audio guidance for people with visual impairments
Banca Transilvania has begun implementing Step-Hear, an international assistive orientation solution that provides audio guidance for people who are blind, helping to improve accessibility in customer areas. The technology is developed by the company of the same name and is used in several countries to facilitate autonomous navigation in public and private locations.
The first BT branch equipped with Step-Hear:
BT’s Cluj Branch (Calea Dorobanților 27-29, Cluj-Napoca) is the first BT location to implement this technology. The choice of location is particularly meaningful because of its proximity to the Special High School for the Visually Impaired, ensuring an immediate impact for the local community. BT will gradually roll out the technology to other premises to make them as inclusive as possible.
How Step-Hear works:
- The app is free in the App Store and Google Play. Once installed, the mobile phone becomes a tool for independent navigation, providing access to private and public services.
- The system is based on Bluetooth communication between the phone and Step-Hear devices installed in various locations, such as BT’s Cluj Branch.
- At BT’s Cluj Branch, the technology helps people who are blind identify key areas such as the entrance, teller counters and ATMs.
Recent BT or bank-supported initiatives in the ESG area:
- BT Sustainability Report 2025;
- D&I Living Library, an event hosted by Banca Transilvania (STUP) and organized by the Diversity Charter in Romania, in Bucharest;
- Accessibility Beyond Limits, an event hosted by BT in Cluj-Napoca, organized by DEI Cluj Talk Series;
- PEDITEL expansion for the diaspora (starting in the United Kingdom) – the free pediatric telemedicine service.
- Continuation this year of the what’s next program, dedicated to pupils, parents, teachers and school counselors, providing career guidance for children and young people.
